Dan Rather was set up. He was intentionally fed a bogus memo, because they knew he would air it without checking. Once the 'scandal' broke, everyone forgot that Bush DID walk away from his air national guard service, but the rush to condemn Rather shifted the focus from the truth, Bush went awol, to the lie, the memo was a fake. Brilliant job by Rove and Co.
Ok, I gave it another go. I watched CBS Evening news again the other night. I still can't help but think that Katie has some cheerleader pompoms sitting under the desk. Network evening news is a dead, dieing medium heading towards a slow miserable well deserved death. I can't for the life of me figure out why they just dont give it up.
June 27, 2008; Steve Hartman's Spawn.

Give us all a damn break! I understand pappa being happy. Proud, even. Brag at work--to co-workers. LEAVE THE NATIONAL NEWS ALONE.

Spawning ain't particularly difficult. 17 girls in one Massachusetts school have done it! Really. Without the help of CBS Evening News.

So what does our Cutie Katie do? Get out the Lay-Z-Boys, hold her hands all compassionate and let ol' Steve-o brag that his balls work. Really. Good boy Steve. Now run off and leave us alone.

I have a question for virile ol' Steve; Did you, at least, have some fun? Especially when you Photoshopped the photo?

Katie has been distructed enough. Now we gotta put up with Steve Hartman gonads. Where the hell is Dan the Liar?
To use a Ratherism: It's Katie bar the door on the evening news. With the internet, who even watches the evening news anyhow? The shark jump began with Rather and the baton was passed mid-air to the horribly mis-cast Ms. Couric. I feel like I'm watching a Jr. High School cheerleader deliver the world's news. The 150 year old Cronkite would be an improvement at this point.
Katie Couric is wonderful ! Hers is the only network news show I'll watch because it is the only one that is not dripping testosterone all over the studio floor. Solid reporting (OK, with a liberal bent) and terrific election coverage.

The only other news show worth watching is Tom Leherer's "News Hour" on PBS.
it got bad when katie couric became the anchor, she is too inexperienced.
I liked Katie on Today in her role as an overaged college girl, an older woman with a youthful sex appeal but for this same reason I could never take her seriously as a newswoman.

To be fair though, it's not Katie that made this show jump but the 24 hour cable news programs and ultimately the internet; the broadcast network evening news program are just not nearly as necessary and relevant as they were decades ago. Uncle Walter at the peak of his powers would not have 1/4 the clout now that he did during the rabbit-ears era. This made it extra hard for me to understand when they threw all that cash at Couric. Didn't the CBS execs have the sense to realize that this kind of show is all so over with?
It appears as though Katie on CBS is DOA. Hopefully, she'll be dropped by them soon and then they can search for a real anchor. Let's hope it's someone who isn't a flaming liberal (Couric, Rather, Cronkite) whose bias gets in the way of almost every story.
Fox is reporting, April 10, 2008, that our Miss Katy will be leaving CBS Evening News in January, 2009! Celebration time!

Here it is; CBS aligns with CNN for reporting -- April 8, 2008. What? Mr. Redstone, you finally fire too many reporters? Is NEWS too difficult for CBS?

Here's a freebee--put that weasel, Byant Gumball at Anchor and sit around interviewing Steve Hartman about all the softie news.

The GOOD? Finally, ALL the Couricisms will be gone. Gone. GONE.

Good-night Miss Couric.

2.Kutie Couric...although I hear that she may be on her way out!
"Getting women interested in the news is a good thing. . . ." is one of the great comments of the 15th century.
I do not discount the Katie naysayers, but I will play Devil's advocate and say a couple of things positive about her. She projects a great warmth, and though the news is not as incisive as NBC, Couric is the most accessable newscaster since Cronkite. The election reporting has been excellent, and she is certainly helped by some great old hands like Bob Shieffer. perhaps most important, Couric has attracted my girlfriend to the broadcast, which is the demographic that CBS was maybe aiming for in the first place. Getting women interested in the news is a good thing, even if other reporting is not as good as it once was.
Definitely Couric - never watched it since. Insulting to existing reporters by going outside the hierarchy to hire a "Star" anchor.
Here's how to boost KC's sagging ratings..have her read the news propped up on a stool, wearing a short skirt and have her cross and uncross her legs every 30 seconds. Great gams.
Jumped when Rather went with the Bush/ National Guard story. A big, arrogant gamble that went very, very bad. I intensely dislike the Bush Administration, but no news organization should EVER go with copy that isn't backed up with hard proof, i.e "the smoking gun". I suspect there is something to the story, and, hey, Daddy ran the C.I.A, and he could cover up anything, but the increasingly quixotic Rather went WAY over the Great White with THIS story. Furthermore, his reaction was cowardly, quickly throwing the reporter under the bus in a vain attempt to save his own hide. The once great CBS news organization never recovered. Personally this was my greatest disappointment with media reporting, and the sad fallout is a total turd like Karl Rove could get away with(and this dweeb scumbag got away with plenty) haughtily dismissing a truly great reporter like Leslie Stahl like she was a 22-year-old stringer from the Stiffsock County Advertiser. I saw this and knew CBS was finished as a respected reporter of world news.

I have no great animosity to Katie Couric, but she softened the reporting further. It is more women-oriented, and according to my spies in the CBS organization the word from on high is that local news is supposed to follow suit. There is even less reporting of the Iraq War (never great, since reporters are targets of the insurrectionists there), though Lara Logan has done a valiant job of trying to describe this slow-motion train wreck. The broadcast pales in comparison to the much-improved reporting on NBC. A giant has fallen.
