I'll tell you the only thing about this show that bothered me was the Android Saga (before Cell). Right from the Namek Saga it was mentioned that Goku was the 2nd ever Super Saiyan. I could see the future Trunks being a super saiyan, but suddenly any of the saiyans could suddenly become one? It ruined the power of the Super Saiyan.

Oh, that and I was disturbed by how none of the "destroyers of the world" NEVER started by blowing up the Earth. They always fought first (and that's why the Buu Saga wasn't the reason for the jump, Kid Buu just blew it up).
Just to clarify here, FREIZA WAS NEVER FEMALE.

In Japan, giving a male antagonist an effeminate voice/appearance is seen to make them seem more sinister.

To me, DragonballZ was nothing but odd looking cartoon characters with wierd hairdos screaming at each other. I couldn't watch 2 minutes of this show before I had to turn the channel and find something quiet to watch (like a NatGeo special about howler monkeys).
Well since db and dbz were one manga, I'll count them as one show. I always felt that when gohan was born it was a slap in the face to the others. Screw years of training, I'm Gohan and have an unlimited amount of hidden power. Besides Gohan I thought it was good until cell saga. It became the sayian show.
Hey Nick your a tool and if you don't like anime why are you posting in the first place. You know you have a Pokemon card in the back pocket of your Osh Gosh Bgosh overalls. I will go Super Saiyan on your arse then I will burn the Playboys you keep under your matress. So why don't you go back to the Star Trek posts.
Definitely after Frieza. My biggest gripe has to be how after EVERY BAD GUY has to be "the most powerful being in the universe!" I mean, have they explored the entire universe? How many 'most powerful beings in the Universe' are there?

That gripe aside, I liked everything up to and including Frieza. I LOVED the giant-monkey transformations, (though I hate how they changed the sounds it makes with the new dub.... from an inhuman bestial roaring sound, to just a human voice going "AAARRRRGGGHHHHH!" and deepened a little.) Also, Vegeta was a kick-ass villain. And I have to give them credit for avoiding a major shark-jump when they made Vegeta a 'good guy.' They could have totally screwed it up and changed Vegeta's personality, but luckily they took the smart route and kept him as the same arrogant sarcastic smirking character, just changed which side he was on.

Now even though I liked the Frieza Saga, there were some signs of the early shark jump there. Vegeta was powerful but Frieza is where we see the start of 'The most powerful being in the universe!' syndrome that the series has been plagued with ever since. See after Frieza, the series had nowhere to go. Frieza was 'The Most Powerful,' so where could they go from there that wasn't an anticlimax? So they started bringing on the stupid looking androids.... then the 'cool looking Androids,' and then the unending cell-saga, followed by the INSUFFERABLE majin-buu. I'll get to the Buuger in a second, but first some gripes about Frieza:

Why did they keep referring to Frieza as 'He'? Frieza was clearly female. Those lips and that voice confirmed it. If not female, then at least Hermaphroditic. If they would have just admitted that Frieza had a vagina, it would have made more sense than calling it 'He' all the time. Either that or make Frieza a bit more masculine. Frieza's daddy King Cold (ooooooh I get it.... Frieza sounds like Freeze, so her daddy is named King Cold! How very clever) sounded and looked more 'male'. As it stands the entire Frieza saga was Goku fighting a girl and almost losing.

Secondly Frieza's 'transformations.' That I didn't get either. Were they growth stages like Cell's? In that case why did King Cold look like a giant version of pre-transformed Frieza? Or can they just never transform back?

Anyways, after Frieza gets her ass kicked on Namek, she comes back as an android with her big daddy, and this is where the series leaves the ramp and sails over the snapping jaws of TV Death. Frieza, the MOST POWERFUL BEING IN THE UNIVERSE!!!!!!111!!! (I'm getting so sick of typing this), barely gets a word out, and then this purple-haired raver from the future appears and chops her in half with that big stupid sword. You know, being thrown to the planet's core into molten lava couldn't kill her fully, but this little purple haired kid with a goofy haircut just neatly chops her in two without even having to go 'Super Saiyan.'

After that we get the androids, then Cell is where I think the series deserved to be cancelled. The entire Cell saga did nothing but piss me off. First we have to put up with more of Trunks. Trunks sucks. How come Gohan was a Sayian/Human hybrid but He still had black spikey hair and a tail, while Trunks came out purple haired and tailless? He didn't even look like a bloody saiyan. Yeah I realise that Gohan's mother had black hair and dark eyes too, whereas Bulma had blue eyes and blue hair (like a retarded marge simpson), but that still doesn't explain the taillessness. When Trunks appeared I was looking forward to another Giant Monkey Transformation, but no, they made him this wussy kid trying to connect with his father. I never liked Trunks. Even his name blows.

But the worst part about Cell was how friggin LONG everyone took to 'power up.' You can tell they weren't even trying anymore when whole episodes would be devoted to Goku or Vegeta standing there going "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGGGGGGGGHH!!!!" while energy bolts surround them and their veins bulge and their hair sticks up, as the Villain stares at them with a bored look the whole while. Seems to me if I was a DBZ villain, I'd just wait for Goku to start 'Powering Up' and then kick him in the balls.

Of course then there was Buu, and all credibility was thrown out the window. I BLOODY HATE BUU. What a villain, a big fat retarded baby who talks like Elmo and wears a big poofy diaper. OH And he turns people into candy and eats them! We went from Vegeta, who ends up convincing Bulma to cheat on Mr Uggo (with the scarred up face and chest) and gets her pregnant just to dump her ass and act like nothing happened (Bulma seemed remarkably unbothered by this BTW) to Frieza the MOST POWERFUL GIRL IN THE UNIVERSE! to Cell to Big Fat Pantscrapper. I understand he later turns into something a little less stupid, but by then I had totally stopped watching.

If the animators and producers had any sense, they would have retired the series after the Frieza Saga. Goku had just defeated "THE MOST POWERFUL GIRL IN THE UNIVERSE!", he should have called it a day and went home to bang Chi-Chi or whatever her name was. They could have done a Gohan spin off similar to the original Dragon Ball, where Gohan goes through various adventures growing up, instead of this big mess. I mean seriously, BUU? He looked more like he needed a diaper change than a beating.
I think it jumped after the Frieza saga. This is going to turn into a rambling session on why I don't think the episodes after that are worthwhile.
Dragonball was a nice series with a lot of iconic characters. Then, DBZ finally explained the reasons for why Goku is the way he is (he's an alien), a mystery in the original DB. It turned into a more action-oriented show, and it worked, at first. Fighting Frieza, the man who destroyed Goku's home planet, was what the whole Z series was leading up to after Raditz arrived. It would have been a good climax to the whole thing. I'm not saying the episodes after that didn't have some good things to them. I personally liked Hercule/Mr. Satan, and liked that Gohan finally saved the world in the Cell saga. This was probably the best thing to come out of the later episodes, and I thought it was fitting that after all the Hidden Power stuff from the start of DBZ, Gohan got to take down one of the villains. Cell wasn't as cool a villian as Frieza, though. Cell only existed as a revenge plot by Dr. Gero, a man from the RR saga, but who had not been mentioned back then. But Cell's motivation ended up being "I'm going to destroy the world for fun!" After Cell, they brought in a whole hierarchy of Kais. They had previously talked as if King Kai was the only one. Now, there are more of them. Buu's origin was better than Cell's rather dull one, but the motivation remained pretty non-existent. I did rather like "Fat" Buu's friendship with Hercule. Anyway, the fighting with both Cell and Buu went on forever. The fighting in the earlier sagas often went on too long as well, but it was simply fresher then than in the later episodes. The villains weren't as cool, and it was pretty obvious at that point that death didn't mean anything, as they could simply be wished back. That's a criticism of earlier episodes too, but I think they were worthwhile, overall. I suppose it's possible that if I had seen the later episodes first, I would have liked them better instead, but seeing the series from the beginning, I'd say it should have ended with Frieza, and them all going back to Earth.
DBGT was just ridiculous in its premise. Turning Goku into a kid again seems like a pretty desperate move to recapture the charm of the early Dragonball. It had its moments, too, but it was pretty tired by that point. I liked its idea for the final saga though. It brings the story back to the dragonballs, and perhaps came as close as they could have at that point to salvaging the story into a fitting conclusion.
DBZ takes too long for anything to happen. The Buu saga had Buu, my favorite DBZ villain-turned-good guy.
I agree completely with Miguel's comment, you cant compare the old to the new in this case. It did so much for the Anime genre, not only in presentation, but through attracting viewers. One could say that without the original DBZ, Anime may have never taken off in the west.
The American Version sucks. and the only reason DB fans in the states are acused of being reatards is because they like the american version!!!!!!!!! if u watch the japanese version u´ll understand whatI say.
You r-tards need to understand something. DBZ, as it might not appear, was done in the late 80's. Yes almost 20 years ago. Why do you ask so much FOR THE FIRST ANIME TO SHOW SUPER TIGHT ASS FIGHTS? Maybe Before you criticize DBZ, get into your HEAD, that IT WAS THE FIRST IN ITS GENRE TO SHOW US THAT KIND OF POWERS, BATTLES. In mofokin FACT, akira TORIYAMA was THE FIRST ONE TO COME UP WITH THE IDEA OF THE "VISIBLE KI", ki existed along time ago, ancient times. But akira with his kamehameha MADE IT VISIBLE AND gave it A freakin definition, he didnt copied it from a book or something. He made everything up, and He didnt have a fukin show to based his fights on or a show to base the characters on because it was the first, THATS WHY IT JUMPED THE FIRST DAY IN THE LATE 80's until IT WAS OVER. Now +15 years later u watch the anime and compare it with ultra super computerized done today anime who are not original because they are based off DBZ? Naga plz.

DBZ rocked and it revolutionized anime. You can't CRITICIZE IT, YOU JUST CANT, IT WAS ONE OF, IF NOT,FIRSTS OK? ITS A CLASSIC, you understand the word CLASSIC? Take the first song about Piano made 2000 years ago, now u compare it with the ones done today and u say it sucked. You need to get your head out of your asses. If it wasn't for DBZ, the animes YOU LIKE TODAY, would not exist, MOST OF THEM HAD THE INFLUENCE OF DBZ, the good old piccolo villain that became good after who is after a little boy who showed him love( you can see that combo in almost every anime) or the funny Master roshi perverted teacher (I dont even have to mention the shows(theres a roshi in naruto and rurouni kenshin, the only two animes i saw after dbz). R-TARDS.
I didn't start watching this show until the Buu saga. I enjoyed it so much, I had to see all the episodes from the beginning of the original Dragon Ball and continued to watch to the end of Dragonball GT. It's great how time passes by in this show and as the series progresses the main cast gets bigger. I thought it had a great ending. By the end of the last episode of the GT series there are four generations of characters.
This show jumped when they stopped making movies and episodes for it. And i'll explain why:

First reason is, in my opinion, the most ironic. Everybody here complains about how they were sick of the repetitive plot about how villains come and go, and how with each villain comes a new 'level' of Super Saiyan. However, i'll put money on at least 95% of those people having watched the show avidly, despite this. End of the day, overpowered heroes fighting overpowered villains sells. The proof that people still loved the show regardless is the huge success that the movies had, even after the show finished. They wouldn't have made around TWENTY movies if they weren't popular and in demand.

The second reason deals with the retards who say only retards like DBZ. You see already where i'm going with this. I guarantee that, more often than not, every person who slags off DBZ, about how it's childish crap and so on, watched DBZ religiously when they were younger. Combine this with the first reason (the fact that everyone would watch it avidly until it ended) and you see my point.

Third reason is dragonball GT. I'll be blunt - it sucked. The transformation to SSJ4 was about the only thing people watched DBGT for, and then stopped watching it after that. Had the 'new series' of the DragonBall series been half as good as DBZ, this probably wouldn't have happened. Not immediately anyway.

Fourth and final reason only applies to some of us. Some of us do actually like to go back occasionally, and look at the old classic sagas, like the Namek Saga. vegeta getting his ass handed to him in every fight was good, and the battle between Goku and Frieza was one of the greatest battles ever made not just in DBZ, but in Japanese animation history. It's sometimes good to look back on those episodes (albeit not often - one or two times a year, something like that) and watch what we used to love as kids.
