I'm p.s.ing my own post to tell everyone that if you want a hat exactly like good ol'Gilligan wore, just do like I did and log on to Bob Denver's old website(his widow still runs it) where you can order one for 19.95!For an extra 20 you can get next day shipping! They have the shirts too,but I didn't go that far!I had been searching practically my whole life for a hat exactly like that one and now I have one!
Man,this show was the greatest! All the bad permutations(Especially that horrid 'survivors'rip off!)only make me love and respect the original even more!Everybody talks about the Phil silvers episode being the best one,but MY favorite is the one with" the mosquitoes"!There's ol'Gilligan pounding away on the skins and his "granny"glasses go flying off!He doesn't miss a beat!THAT'S PROFESSIONALISM PEOPLE!!
Wow, with so many comments posted about GI, what can I possibly add to this discussion? Well...
The show was fun to watch. I watched it in syndication only - I was born in '66 and would have only been able to see the third and final season in primetime. I don't remember doing so at less than 1. I watched it on WTCG 17 (a UHF station - remember the little round UHF antennaes?) in Atlanta, GA in the 1970s after school at 4 pm.
The B&W first season has been colorized on DVD - the viewer can see it either way. With the next 2 seasons already in color, I prefer the first in B&W. Just a personal preference, but then I'm a purist in that sense.
Sherwood Schwartz's book, "Inside Gilligan's Island" is a fascinating read. He writes about how William Paley at CBS wanted to kill that show for the entire 3 season run and how CBS screwed him over in different ways. For instance, CBS killed GI AFTER the 3rd and final season had wrapped. Everyone thought a 4th season was in the bag, so a rescue episode was never filmed. Had Schwartz known BEFORE the third season was over that GI would be cancelled, he would have ended with a rescue episode.
CBS withheld residuals and underpaid Schwartz during the initial 3 year run. Schwartz went on to create and produce The Brady Bunch to finally make money (with ABC) that was initially not made with GI. Schwartz sued CBS after GI was cancelled and didn't get any sort of settlement until 1974, after The Brady Bunch was cancelled.
Russell Johnson (the professor) also wrote a book of his experiences giving interesting behind the camera gossip and stories while on the set. He writes of a real life incident where Alan Hale (Skipper) yelled at Bob Denver (Gilligan) after Bob was late to the set of the TV movie in 1978 - Rescue from Gilligan's Island. Apparently this was the last day of filming and everyone was anxious to go home and be done with a very grueling experience making the movie. Bob Denver was in a local bar and arrived to the set significantly late, holding up production. He was also tipsy. Alan didn't appreciate that and let Bob know about it.
Apparently Bob Denver and Tina Louise (Ginger) didn't get along too well either.
As a Laurel and Hardy fan, I always thought Skipper and Gilligan was modeled after L&H (I won't go so far as to say "ripped-off"). Interesting fact - Stanley Laurel off camera was intelligent, often times in charge, and a complete opposite of his screen character. Bob Denver was also a total opposite of his screen persona - an intellectual and introvert in real life - not the "typical" Hollywood star.

I like most of your casting ideas but I think the characters of Gilligan and Ginger should be closer in age; it'd look creepy to see a woman in her 50s chasing Zac around. Hell, Madonna's daughter (unibrow and all) is closer to Zac's age than Madonna is. How about Amanda Bynes? She had a lot of screen presence on Nick as a child (All That, The Amanda Show)but not as much now that she's older. And guest appearances by the surviving castaways would be fun. I can't see Tina Louise doing it but I'm sure Russell Johnson or Dawn Wells would jump at the chance.
(AWW-Scracth Steve Carell as Gilligma, I FORGOT I had put Zac Efron as Gilligan
Anywya, Happy Birthday to Dawn Wells aka Mary Ann.
Here is the cast I have in mind:
Gilligan: Zac Efron
Skipper: John Goodman
Professor: Tobey MacGuire
Mary-Ann: Rachel Bilson
Thurston: Phillip S.Hoffman
Lovey: Allison Janney
Ginger: Madonna
(Maddie. Don't let 'Swept Away" bring you down here, you cna sitll act.)
BTW John Goodman was a good choice, von Smitty..Zaqc Efron seeing him in High School Musical and hairspray is versatile enough I think by now that he can PLAY GILLIGAN. Rachel Bilson is 27, the age Dwn Well was in 1964 when she played Mary Ann. She has the righgt looks and style.

Von Smitty (may 16, '08) had a good Skipper choice, for a movie, John Goodman. I'll go with that and add:
Gilligan: Steve Carell
Skipper: John Goodman
Mary Ann: Rachel Bilson
Ginger: Madonna (well, they both copy Marilyn Monroe)
Lovey: Allison Janney
Thurston: Phillio Seymour Hoffman
Gilligan: Zac Efron (NOT JOKING)

If you were a nerdy, intellectual, academia type and had Ginger and Mary Anne on a deserted island, and your only competition was a fat captain and a bumbling idiot, would you build a boat?
Very interesting, plausible theory! Now, how did Ginger manage salon-perfect hair at all times in the middle of nowhere?
OK to the posters that don't get it.
Resort hotels have lots of things to do.
For instance many resorts offer boat tours around the islands.
The Howells came and for some reason their rooms weren't ready. I worked in a place like this and if rooms weren't ready we'd give them free drinks in the bar, a free pass to the golf course or yes a free cruise on the island boat (we had 1/2 hour and hour cruises). This while we got their rooms ready.
So it's obvious the Howells came to check in and their room wasn't ready. They gave part of their luggage to the bellman to hold but took part of their luggage, including the cases with money and pills with them.
Ginger was singing in the resort's night club. Mary Ann and the Professor signed up for the island tour. Later Ginger joined them for some reason.
The Skipper and Gilligan run the cruise which is not owned by the hotel but leases a spot FROM the hotel's marina. This explains why Ginger and the crew don't know each other.
It explains why the Howells have luggage. Then on the three hour tour the weather turns bad and it isn't till the next morning when they are washed ashore.
The Professor gives the location of the island as 140° longitude, 10° latitude this puts it' over 1,000 miles from Hawaii. Surely it wasn't the inability to build a raft but the idea that they were so far out of the shipping lanes they couldn't be sure they'd reach an Island.

Dale, I do remember Dusty's Trail! I'm glad I'm not the only one that remembers that dog! What a terrible show! It was created by Sherwood Schwartz' brother (I believe) and was almost a complete ripoff of Gilligan's Island. It's also listed on this website. Check it out if you are interested.
Peace.
Peace.
The "new" Ginger in the Rescue film was prettier than Tina Louise!
At the end of the Rescue film the Minnow 2 was al;so wrecked - Guess where? Gilligan found a piece of wreckage from the original Minnow. "We're back home..."
Does anybody remember the Bob Denver series "Dusty's Trail" which fatured a pretty girl, a plain girl, an intellictual man, A rich couple, & the wagon boss as well as incompetent scout Dusty. Sound familiar?
