There was no moment when the show truly jumped, but the few episodes without Mike weren't that great.
The few shows without Mike all come in the second season, and when those shows would come on, I remember being a bit bored...

The show was awesome during Season 1, but was beginning to jump during Season 2 when they pulled the plug. I've never seen "Head" so I can't really judge, but I know the story behind it. For it's day the music holds up very well, and you get it in the 1st season w/out all the late 60's crap associated w/it. The "you had to be there" stoner humor that sometimes surfaces in the second season does date it a bit, but overall the show managed to keep it's fun sense of the times going.
It's impossible to tell whether it would've sunk into 'peace & love" cliche's (and moved toward more raunch) but what remains is solid. One thing I must say though. I love how the posts here laud the clean comedy over the allegedly overblown sex stuff of today. That's cool w/me - superior classic comedians like the 3 Stooges/Marx Bros./ A & C/ L & H/ Cary Grant all had that going on. Then people note they were part of the 60's generation, which encouraged the whole "free love" bit. Has it hit everybody yet how infinitely superior those classic comedians were to both the 60's & today?
Words spoken by someone who appreciates the show for the show, but wishes the hypocritical bashing of the modern universe be given a second look.

I agree with you Lisa, there isn't enough of this show on tv.
I was in the monkees generation but still love the show because the music brings back so many memories.
I prefer the old shows --you can actually watch them without all the bleeps. Who says clean cant be funny?
If you have on demand you can watch the monkees everyday. I DO!

This show is so great. However I can never seem to locate any of the DVD's or ***** cassetts at any of my local stores. The only TV shows they seem to have are all the stupid lousy ones that are being shown on TV now! And why did IONTV take this show off after just a few weeks?! So they can make room for more filthy modern sitcoms?! Drew Carey?! Give me a break!! You can't even count on Nick at Nite to show this because they're constantly showing either dopey cartoon programs, or reruns of "Mad About You", "George Lopez" and "Home Improvement"! TV Land, forget about it! It's turned into "Reatity TV Land", with the only SCRIPTED shows being "Leave it to Beaver", "Bonanza", "Little House" and "The Addams Family"! And we all know both MTV and VH1 are too busy showing reality shows and crappy gossip shows to even show any quality programming at all! I even remember when it was at one point being shown again on network television during the summer of 2000, and I would tape it everyday because I'd be at work while it was on. Now, all they show during the day are courtroom shows! I loved this show since I was a kid and I still love it now as an adult. I thought all of the guys were cute and funny and the humor was so clean, yet so funny. Not like all the crap out there today and from last decade that's all about sex! I think TV networks need to get a clue!
Just curious: anyone here know the inside story as to why Mike is not acting (just singing) in some of the second-season episodes?
i love that show more than bread, and i love bread. The four Monkees tie in the favorite rank. I don't reckon it ever jumped. I wish it could've run longer so I could bask in more clean comedy. poor poor mindless children of today will never have half as much class for comedy as the children in the Monkee generation. Does anyone know where to get it on DVD?
I think the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame should create a new category for films and TV shows. American Bandstand, Monkees, Hard Day's Night, etc. were all extremely influencial to rock music.
The Monkees are the only rock and roll act that can use an empty Maxwell House coffee can as a musical instrument--what sheer genius!
Did you know that John Lennon was a big fan of the show? He even told them that.
There is an unpleasant, but true, story behind the song "Not Your Stepping Stone" and how the Monkees came to record it. I knew the guy who wrote it and it was not written for the Monkees. Made me not like them much for a while.

The Monkees NEVER JUMPED. It's one of the best shows ever to be on air.
And the movie, Head, is frigging brilliant.

The Monkees never JTS. Ever!!! The humor was, is, and always will be timeless - and hilarious! To all those who tried to bring down their name - take a hike! Even today, they're still the four funny guys that they were 40 years ago (they're just a bit older! :D)
P.S. The second season is when Micky's natural hair came out!
