Murphy Brown UN - jumped when the Clintons were in the White House. That was when the show went up hill because Bill Clinton was the only president besides Ronald Reagan who wasn't boring. That gave MB a shot in the arm. The episode about Socks showing up in Murphy's apartment was a gem - especially Corky's line,"The Clintons were crying on television!". I taped it and still watch it from time to time.
I used to LOVE this show. I never missed it. Then Democrats got in office and Murphy didn't have anything interesting to rally against. Believe me, the democrats weren't perfect and a journalist with her integrity should have been complaining about that as much as she complained about a republican who couldn't spell.
--But no, the show suddenly went soft and focused on uninteresting things like her baby and Barry Mandilow music.
I lost my favorite show of the time. I finally got to where I only watched Murphy Brown when the Quantum Leap guy was on. I didn't even know that Jim left and I only knew about Lily Tomlin from the commercials.

I'd say the show jumped with Avery's birth.
It's so funny to read people complaining about how the show was biased. As if this was a real news program that was supposed to be objective, lol! It was a sitcom that had a particular point of view, get over it people! It's not like some great injustice was done to you - you just couldn't take watching a show that had a different perspective on things than you - boo hoo!

Show was not half bad even though it had a liberal bias which -- to its credit -- it was generally open about.
The show jumped with the controversy with Dan Quayle. The VP should have never made the show an issue and the show would have done well to ignore him. A lot of other people did, why not the show's writers?
The show really fell into the water and was devour by the shark when Jim Dial uncharacteristically left FYI in protest of a anti-smoking piece being rejected by the network lawyers during the 1995 - 96 season. That season was forgettable and finally tanked with Miles left the show. Lily Tomlin did OK as the new executive producer but the show was dying.
If the show had ended at the end of the 1996 season it might have had a big send off. Instead, its last episode was right after Seinfeld's last episode and nobody really noticed or cared.

It jumped over two sharks when Grant S. (Miles) left and was replaced by Lily Tomlin.
I stopped watching then. I still won't watch the reruns of the last season either.

It jumped when they took advantage of Dan Quayle's commentary. He was referring to the unmarried pregnant Murphy Brown as the television character Candace Bergen played. The viewers of the show were supposed to believe that Murphy was an anchorwoman for a local television station in Washington, D.C., not a nationally-known journalist. If a real Washington anchorwoman had been in the same position, Quayle wouldn't have gone on the air about it.
Started to go downhill fast with the birth of Avery and got eaten by the shark when Miles and Corky married.
More reruns and please PLEASE PLEASE put the rest of the seriers on DVD PLEASE... I am begging here!!!!
Thanks
Thanks
Agree with many of you.Though dated, early episodes are still fun to watch.Jumped a few times(in no particular order)Murphy getting pregnant, having a baby,Eldin leaves,Miles(the best character on the show)leaves.Change of newsroom background. All in all though, early episodes still make me laugh.Gary Marshall & Paul Reubens were great!
It was funny before the Dan Quayle incident. After that, the writers and actors became way too full of themselves, which was a mistake, since outwitting Dan Quayle is like shooting fish in a barrel.
This was posted awhile back on this site:
I'm sorry, but breast cancer just isn't funny. I can't believe they'd make it a central plot element in a show that's supposed to make people laugh. This was my all-time favorite comedy until that point. After that, I just stopped watching. Very, very stupid move.
Agreed, and seconded! That is precisely what made me stop watching this show. This show was not the best forum for breast cancer awareness. It was sad.

I believe it jumped when the "Murphy Brown" cast/writers believed that they could influenece the election. They were making money off making fun of Republicans, while trying to get them off of office. I believe that some people missed the "Safety Valve" of "Avery's" father. It was "Murphy's ex-husband". Since "Murphy" never re-married in some circles that do not recognize divorce they were still married,
