I have only recently discovered this show and was instantly hooked! I bought the first two seasons immidiately. It has great physical comedy that makes you laugh out loud (you can't beat boochi tag). Jokes are great, (you have pink lemons?) and catchprases are perfect for daily life (of course they are, don be ridiculous). The show is clean enough to let your kids watch, unlike almost every show nowadays. But best of all it's got heart. I love the 'aawww' at the end of each show that gives you a warm fuzzy feeling inside.
I haven't seen many of the later seasons so I can't vouch for the decline, but what I've seen is great!!
This was my favourite sitcom at the time. I agree with Grimlock; what turns me off are shows trying too hard to be edgy. Perfect Strangers was great for its innocence. But as much as I hate to admit it I'm voting that it JTS in the later seasons, when the plot became repetitive. They get into a situation, Larry cooks up a scheme, Balki naively or reluctantly follows his orders, disaster ensues, Larry learns a lesson. It wasn't always like that before. What about that episode where Larry tried to save Balki from getting addicted to TV? Or where Balki had his first heartbreak? Where Larry unintentionally drank a village's worth of cold medicine? And where he dreamt that Mypos was a planet of body snatchers and you could tell that they're aliens if they're wearing the Mypos vest? The earlier episodes are priceless.
This show was never exceptional, on the same token though it wasn't piss poor enough for the networks to cancel.

It was just a mediocre show. Everything about it was so stock. Larry was just an average joe, the girlfriends were typical, everything about it was common product of the 80s.

It jumped the shark by the time Larry and Balki had moved into this castle-like home and married their girlfriends. The show kind of lost touch with the original premise by this point and faded into obscurity after a hiatus in 1992.
What, no one has yet posted a ****** for Ding Ding Mahkt Moot? I think it involves pig snouts...
I remember ABC trying a comedy block similar to their TGIF block, but on Saturday nights. It was called "I Love Saturday Night".

It featured the aging sitcoms "Who's the Boss?" "Growing Pains" "Perfect Strangers" and an animated comedy called "Capitol Critters".

Not surprisingly, all 4 shows ended up getting axed. In August 1992, "Perfect Strangers" was put on hiatus and was gone for the entire 1992-93 season, with the final 6 episodes airing in July 1993.
Worst show ever; no redeeming value.
This show hasn't aged well.. loved it in its day, but saw a few episodes recently and it's not funny now. At all. Balki was like a poor, unfunny precursor to Borat.
This show jumped when Balky was pulled over after he snorted all that coke while driving the white Porsche turbo with the hot blonde. Then he became an informant for the police in order to bust Clarence Worley. True Romance for the win, yo!
Another shark jump was that over the years, Mypos and its culture went from being whimsical, but still believable, to completely off the wall. I can take the idea of Myposians decorating a turtle for Christmas, then returning it to the sea. But for Mypos to be an island with living dinosaurs on it makes it too outlandish to even be believable!
Perfect Strangers is one of my all time favorites, but I do think it started to jump in the fifth or sixth seasons. Suddenly, there's a second Myposian cold cure and that episode wasn't nearly as good as the one in the second season with the herbs and fish parts. I also disliked that Larry seemed to get meaner and meaner to Balki as the years passed, and Balki quit standing up to Larry and just let Larry pick on him.

But through the fourth season, it was totally awesome and even some of the later episodes retained the old spirit. I just wish it had been more consistent with characterization and plot. Oh, well.
Segasan: Louie Anderson as Cousin Larry? Of course not, don't be ridiculous! His voice alone would have kept me away from this wonderful comedy. Buying the Season 1/2 DVD next week. I'm so happy I might do the Dance of... you know.
This show was a PHYSICAL comedy, and I'm guessing some people don't realize that makes it a slightly different formula than most sitcoms. I love physical comedy and what made Perfect Strangers so fun is that you also got GOOD WRITING to go along with the physical aspect. Factor in the great chemistry between Bronson and Mark and it's no wonder the show ran for 8 Seasons! This show has a lot of HEART and SOUL, something that seems to be missing in newer shows. Finally on DVD!
Fact: A pilot episode was filmed with LOUIE ANDERSON as cousin Larry!
Fact: Producers went through many other actors auditions for cousin Larry, and realized after hearing Mark-Linn Baker read, knew he was perfect for the role!
Fact: Perfect Strangers was the 8th most requested show on TVSHOWSONDVD.com for a DVD release!
Fact: Perfect Strangers Complete Seasons 1&2 are now available on DVD!
Perfect Strangers is one of my favorite shows of all time. Still waiting for the DVDs, of course. It ran oh-too-briefly on Nick at Nite, and I need my dance of joy fix every now and then. Mark Linn-Baker was brilliant as Larry Appleton; Bronson Pinchot was great as Balki. One of the greatest comedic teams to come out of ABC during the 80's (see my post as Look What You Did on the Family Matters page for the other pairs). Baker went on to guest star on other ABC shows such as Full House (good work as Becky's cousin) and Hangin' with Mr. Cooper (two good appearances; actually three, but I only remember two). I also enjoyed his acting in a 1985 episode of Moonlighting. (Even Governor Gene Gatling from Benson was terrific as Larry's father).
While Perfect Strangers gave an assist to Baker's career, it would have a converse effect on Pinchot. Perfect Strangers (so far) is the pinnacle of Pinchot's career, as he followed up PS with stints on Step by Step and (shuddering) The Surreal Life. I thought he was a terrific actor (loved his work in the Beverly Hills Cop series); it's a shame his career took the turn it did. Great show.
Great ne! Seasons one and two will finally be released on DVD on February 18. I can't wait. I haven't seen an episode in eleven years!
What is wrong with everybody nowadays? If something isn't reality based or "edgy", everyone is turned off. The joy of this show lies in its innocence and simplicity. The actors had plenty of chemistry and there was a feel good message in every show. So maybe it's not realistic, but I watch TV to escape reality and not to watch other people live their depressing and troubled lives out on the screen. If I see another show about hip twenty-somethings or anything involving doctors, cops or lawyers, I'll gouge my eyes out and move to Mypos!! Television has degenerated over the years and I'll take "Perfect Strangers", "Family Matters", and "Who's the Boss" over most current shows hands down! Long live Balki!! And yes, I am nostalgic.
