It was my favorite show, wish I had it on DVD. Coolest theme song ever, too. haha.
Greatest show ever made pretty much sums it up.
I am now a medical professional and this show was instrumental in my career path. It was the first one to tackle timely public health issues (AIDS anyone?) in a realistic way. No offense to the likes of Quincy and such. St. Elsewhere was so realistic and poignant and humorous, It never EVER jumped!
Truly one of the best shows ever.It is a shame that one still waits for addle-headed studio execs. to finally put all the seasons out on dvd.I am suprised at some of the negative comments expressed by other types posted here.
The producers of St. Elsewhere missed a golden opportunity by not giving Cynthia Sikes' character, Dr. Annie Cavanero, enough meaningful storylines. Cynthia showed the vast range of her talents when she was given the chance, but those opportunities were few and far between.

When Cynthia left the show after the third season, something was definitely missing from the set. Sadly, it was the beginning of the end, and the bomb exploded when Ed Flanders, Howie Mandel and Mark Harmon left after season five.
coolidge who plays a janitor, sees a guy coming off the elevator with his pregnant wife who is played by salami from white shadow..coolidge says yo salami, salami says wrong show dude,or something to that affect..also the episode where howie mandel was god was nuts
Loved it except for the awful Peter the Rapist plotline. That was a disaster, and thankfully the series largely recovered.
Used to watch this show when I was in medical school and get motivated..great show.
I still, to this day, think of the final episode and Fiscus's comment to Gideon: "It's never over till the fat lady sings." Cue his patient, an opera singer with laryngitis who gets her voice back at that moment. 20-odd years later, I remember my reaction: "How ... HOW ... did I not see that coming??" All the signs were there: final show ... heavyset opera singer ... "she has to sing tonight" ... and they slipped it under the radar.

This said, that was shortly after Luther's heartbreaking cry, "Code blue! Code blue! Help Dr. Auschlander!" Then, quietly, despairingly, his face falling, he says, "Dr. Auschlander's dead." Shortly after Westphall's suprise return to the hospital and his own heartbreak at learning of the death of his friend and mentor of 40 years. We had plenty to distract us.

But then, so many shows today would wave that in front of your face: "Hey! Fat lady on the final show! Get it? Get the joke that we're telegraphing from 25 minutes off?"

This show was so wonderful and so underappreciated. Dated in today's terms? Sure. But it would put every other medical show out there ... save, maybe, "Scrubs" ... to shame.
The whole thing being a dream of some kid was dissapointing, but overall I loved the show, never missed it when it came on Wednesdays at 9. In fact my parents would let stay up to watch it even though my bedtime was at 9. Howie Ed Begley Denzel and lots of other great actors who started their careers there. GREAT GREAT Show
Elsewhere was crap
Ive always been of a mind that this show never jumped though the final scene felt unsatisfying.Of course, after seeing the final episode of The Sopranos and thinking how brillant it was, I wonder if maybe I need to rethink the finale of this show.Especially considering that some of the same people from here were working on The Sopranos.Anyone have any idea of when they will be releasing more seasons of this on DVD?
well, after many years I finally bought season 1, the only one available. I have to say, this show is ok, but barely. Things move at a snails pace and there is some serious mis-casting. The psychiatrist, Beale, is moronic and not believeable. The episodes with the bird man and the nest is stupid and should not have been allowed on tv. There was way too much of David Morse, but it was good to see he was an irritant from the begining. There is not enough Denzel. On the plus side, the women are strong and interesting.
ER is a much better show.
St Elsewhere was amazing the first year then it became a horrible soap opera. The main story lines the first year were based in the patients (remember the bird man?) and the staff were subplots. For the rest of the show it turned into pure daytime soap about the staff and made the patients mere props.
THE BEST Medical Drama in the history of television! It had it all- Outstanding ensemble cast, great story lines, humor, pathos, drama, irony, inside jokes. and characters that you cared about, and cared for! Sharp crisp writing- St. E. tackled many relevant topics- AIDS, Autism, breast cancer, homelesness, rape, all with sensitivity and feeling. THIS is the show that ER, & Grey's Anatomy TRY to emulate, but could NEVER hold a bedpan to. The ending, though disappointing to many, is MERELY a metaphor of what this show was all about- as an earlier poster clearly said. It was US looking into the glass globe (The TV screen) and turning away from it-- as it was only our imagination, and it is no more! BRILLIANT! THIS SHOW NEVER JUMPED!!!! IT WAS THE BEST ON TV!!!!!
