The writing and acting were at times brilliant, especially some of Shatner's work.
Danno,
No offense intended, but "brilliant writing?" How about the time they had Kirk recite the Constitution? I guess if you're gonna rip someone off, you might as well start with the founding fathers....
And we all love the Shat, but there's a reason his "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" is considered a YouTube masterpiece (and it ain't cause he comes off as Olivier....)

Star Trek never, ever jumped the shark. The writing and acting were at times brilliant, especially some of Shatner's work.
Best episode was probably "City On The Edge of Forever" guest starring Joan Collins.
This show was way better than the trash on television today.

Found it! Look for "T O S Women", but be sure to place quotes round the expression, or you'll get an avalanche of unrelated material. The address is a weird combo of the words ' all your trek are belong to' , which I don't understand. Live long & prosper!
I also wanted to compliment (the other day) the show for its emphasis on career-minded, individualistic, self-supporting girl crew-members. They were sexy, yes!, in those mini-dress uniforms & tights ; however, they were, above all, independent individuals, making their own livings, making their own decisions. I have always thought that the classic, original Star Trek (1966 - 1969) did a much better job @ promoting the opening of frontiers for the girls than the later, dreary, p c , politically - correct, victim - victim type shows of later decades. I stumbled across an excellent web site at some point dedicated to this very point & engaging in a very thorough review re this subject ; I think it was called the Original Series Women or O S Women -- does some-one know what the address for it is? Thanks in advance. -- City Joe
Anyone else notice "To boldly go where no man has gone before" meant hanging out at a new Federation outpost every week?
I've always had mixed feelings. The 1st dozen or so episodes were pretty bad -- then they got themselves straightened out & things improved. The writing was hit-&-miss. I particularly hated the episodes involving the kidnapping of the crew by superior creatures ( Greek & Roman gods or philosophers or some sadistic race ) & all that mind-control tripe. They repeated that dull theme quite a few times. There were also some unbelievably ugly, alien, space, so-called-beauties with god-awful beehives & Marie-Antoinette shaggy hair-pillars piled on their heads ! They look so old! What in Earth were Roddenberry & the hair people & Hollywood thinking in that era? Some of them look like elderly poodles. It really ages them & dates the show, to boot. Fortunately, the girl crew-members were spared that nonsense (though there was that 1 girl in the very beginning stuck with that Marie-Antoinette ugly tower, but they wrote her out of the show very quickly -- I skip those episodes anyway). In fact, the very best episodes involved the appearances (alas, one-time showings) of individual, previously - unknown girl crew-members beaming down with the regulars. Above all else, the camaraderie (good language?) of the regular cast-members (Kirk, Spock, Doc, Scot, the Oriental gentleman, the Russian gentleman, the delightful Black lady at Communications) -- I've forgotten most of their names -- : they are such a delight that they can cover a myriad of writing stumbles & falls. I'm a fan, though not a die-hard 1. (I find the later Enterprises too p c, too politically - correct & unwatchable.) Apologies for my weak English & lengthy post. -- City Joe
This is my favorite show of all time. It never jumped the shark. My belief is that every episode is great. One or a few bad episodes is not enough for a series to jump; it does not ruin the show. For a series to truly JTS, it has to be ruined passed the point of no return such as Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, or Married with children, etc. The shark jumping is usually triggered by some disastrous plot change or actor departure. For those of you who believe Trek jumped, you cite some bad 3rd season episodes. There may be some lesser quality episodes yes, but they quickly recovered and restored the bar. Good day to all of you in TV land!
STAR TREK WENT DOWNHILL AFTER EPOSODE ONE SHATNER NIMOY KELLEY DOOHAN etc WERE ALL HAM"S THERE CHARACTER"S KIRK-SELF-RIGHTEOUS, SPOCK-WEIRD,MCCOY-JACKASS, SCOTTY-COWARD IT WAS PURE WISHFUL THINKING <
Agonybooth.com in their review of Star Trek: The Animated Series made a strange statement concerning the cartoon's production. They claimed Leonard Nimoy got Majel Barret(Nurse Chapel) her job on TAS in the early 70's! Considering how romantically involved Barret was with Roddenberry in reallife at that time why would Nimoy have had to intervene to get her the animated part of Nurse Chapel? Like many agonybooth.com statements this is never given the source of. I wrote this here as this concerns the later happenings of three TOS "crew members" and there is no board for Star Trek: TAS! Can anyone here verify or disprove the idea that Nimoy got Barret the part? If you can do either please quote your sources! Thanks!
Lucille Ball of Desilu put this show on the air. She was an intelligent and forward thinking woman. William Shatner said it best “The show is about hope.”
In junior high, I signed the petition to keep Star Trek on the air. It was a unique show - very little science fiction on the air at the time, and it was about the only one that tried to make a stab at being thoughtful from time to time. I do remember thinking in the very first episode that the transporter would end up being too powerful of a rescue device and that it would need to be conveniently "disabled" to a suspicious degree (little realizing I would have to deal with the same problem myself when writing for the unofficial fourth season contained in the Interplay computer games many years later). When another petition came around during the third season, the writing had deteriorated to the point that I didn't sign it.
