Death (Carson Beckett)
Never Jumped
Day One
End of season 1: Contact with Earth
Shark Bytes
This show was STARTING to jump the shark in season 2, but then they killed off the incredibly ineffectual character of Liz Weir, brought Beckett mostly back, and put more focus on emotional aspects in storylines, and that vastly improved the entire show. Now it is no longer in danger of shark-jumping. They saved Atlantis just in time.
I thought this show had jumped the shark/nuked the frig when Beckett was offed for no good reason other than to get a person into the role who has to wear a bra. But other day I watched the show where the doc with a bra gets infected with those ugly, brown vine-like alien wormy things. I guess they were going for horror but it was absurd to see the doc with a bra stride in at the end with nary a scar on her face after having that thing practically completely body-snatch her whole body. Goofy as heck yet the Gateworld fans rate it "outstanding"? Unbelievable! This show did jump the shark when Tori and Paul were ousted so roughly from their jobs and episodes like the wormy-alien one just reinforce the image of silly scifi, not good scifi. Shame too, because the CG work and SFX are gorgeous at times.
Atlantis jumped the shark pretty much at the end of season 3. Getting rid of 2 main characters (Weir and Beckett) to make room for Carter and Dr. Keller. I mean...WHY? I guess the official reason was to "shake things up", but there was really no need to. Why introduce a new doctor? There was nothing wrong with Beckett. Why would anyone develop a character for 3 years and then get rid of them to introduce a new character?!? Same thing with Weir, and don't even get me started with Tapping. Here you have an actress that spent 10 years on her own show, only to work for an 11th year on Atlantis (basically kicking Tori Higginson off the show), only to choose to LEAVE the show after 1 year to do her own show (Sanctuary)!!! I mean...double u.tee.eff!!??
Now is it just me or did Tori and Paul get the short end of stick with these changes? The powers that be on this show have treated these people horribly, its no wonder that Higginson doesn't want to come back to the show (and why would she the way that she was treated).
So they introduce Carter in Season 4...and what has she done? Nothing, she basically did Weirs job. She went offsite a couple of times, but her character was nothing like on SG1. There was no growth to her character...just no point in her joining the cast. And as I said, she only lasted 1 season...what the hell was the point?!?
The show has jumped the shark since season 3. Cast changes and god-awful decisions by the powers that be have alienated fans and turned this show into something that’s unrecognizable now. Compare the current season 5 to season 1...half the cast has changed and the spirit is gone. Just let the show die and rest in peace.

I second that motion. The guys a bigger douche than David Blane.
I really didn't mind all that much replacing Ford with Ronan in the second season. They started to JTS when they added Beckett and then killed him off the next season. They nailed the coffin after killing off Weir, and finally buried the casket by adding the holographic doctor from Star Trek. Who will run Atlantis next season? The Chevron Guy? (Actually that might be kind of cool)
SG-1's cast remained for five years but this show barely held one.

Can I just nominate Shepherd for Biggest Douche In The Universe? Man, I really just want to reach through my TV and punch that guy square in the face?
Am I the only one or is it just me?

Jessica Steen was the original, and the best, in my opinon, Dr Weir! Much more interesting interpretation of the character and much stronger. Would have made the series so much better.
Of course now it's moot as the writers have destroyed the series with the inane story lines. And the producers with the ridiculous casting choices.
Put the show out of it's misery ..

Although the particular episode was well done, I think the JTS jump was knocking off McGuigan. I can't believe the bizarre casting changes that now distinguish the series. The creators stated that they wanted to avoid expensive cast members and then hired X-Files guy and Picardo. And now female doctors that look younger than med school interns. And don't get me going on Picardo. Fine actor, but a disaster in sci fi recurring parts. I liked Connor Trinneer in ST but as Mikey the Wraith? I'm waiting for him to sing. Maybe with Picardo and 709?
However with Rodney being a team leader macho weapons guy instead of a scientist, and talk of an all-female recce team (shades of the recent space shuttle crew joke) the production execs must be either desperate or just plain insane. Or maybe they're just feeding acid to their focus groups.
This show could be so good, playing on the fan loyalty established from the Stargate franchise, but I fear it's just becoming business as usual for a bunch of burned out Vancouverites waiting for cancellation and the rest home.
If they' can't find actors for anchor parts make Dan Shea the supreme commander or something. Yeah that's it - have Shea kill off Picardo. Make my day.

Dumbing down Carter I agree with.
Rachel Lutrell was already pregnant, so it was a matter of taking head shots for the majority of the season or write it in... usually THAT decision is a shark jumping decision. We'll see.
There were no plans for John and Teyla to get together. Don't know where you got that...
The SG:A sets are better than the Stargate SG-1 sets, but since I'm partial to SG-1, not much to say about that. Though the true star, the Stargate, seems to have taken a permanent back seat.
Now they've gotten rid of Tapping (who was NOT the Carter we knew from SG-1) we'll see a turnaround in the character development. I'm not too thrilled about Robert Picard takeing over, but he's a talented actor... If he can't pull this show up, it's time to pack it in.
I hope.

Dumbing down Carter to make Rodney and John look competent. Making the Teyla character pregnant, so she and John are now HIGHLY unlikely to ever have a romantic relationship with each other.
Several reasons really, killing off popular characters and substituting them with naff imitations. The writing and the sets are pretty drab and unimaginitive, considering this is set in another galaxy. I think humanising the wraith and the replicators is the worst thing to do, they should be strange and alienesque, but this is true of many shows. I don't know, the sad part is no matter happens to it, people basically sit down and watch it. I guess it is like a curates egg and there is potential there. I guess I always thought stargate could be good as an art house film, like immortel.
I used to watch SA but I didn't like the loss of Beckett and Weir.
I also didn't like what they did to the Rainbow's character after season 1. I don't like Rachel Latturll at all and the whole wraith story line seems to just lag.
SA jumped for me totally after season 3.
Season 1 was good and hoped for continual success for 2 but it started to go downhill for me.
Now, I don't watch the show at all.

They should do a more Science than Fiction version of Stargate where the physics of space travel, energy generation devices, and language translations by microcomputers are correctly depicted. It would change the pace and dramatic outcome of the show.
As far as this show goes, I guess they can clone and replicate any character that has died. So we will see them again in a different form.
It does seem a bit too comfortable for the writers and producers to rely on good old Samantha Carter for this series. Atlantis is supposed to be slicker, tougher, and more unpredictable than the previous series.

To the idiot complaining about aliens speaking English: 1) Are you also pissed that we never see anyone go to the bathroom or pick their noses or pull the lint out of their belly buttons? 2) Is this the first SciFi show you've ever seen?
If you want to specialize in inane criticisms, you should try to be a little more original.

In my opinion:
~One commenter was upset b/c everyone speaks English:
I love Daniel Jackson(and SG-1) but the premise of being able to decipher a language in 20 minutes b/c their culture originally came from Earth is far fetched.
There is a logical reason, budget wise, why everyone speaks English. More so there is even better reason why they all speak English. I speak English - how am I to know what the aliens are saying? I don't think I could have made it thru 10 years of watching sub-titles. Besides how can the bad guys tell when the good English speaking guys are telling them to Frack off? If you want the aliens to speak Alien, umm go watch soap operas. I'm sure they speak a different language.
~My second concern was killing characters off:
I was kinda iffy on Weir, but besides a discourse on her acting (or some say lack there of) how the heck do you develop characters that sit in a office all day? That's my problem - her character is SUPPOSED to stay and sit in the office, she's an admin-diplo.Don't wake her up in a mental institution, and call it char. development. Her sticking to her guns for Sheppard to remain as military commander was brilliant. My point is that Weir AND Beckett weren't first string players on the field simply b/c of the type of person they portrayed. However they WERE important and I'd thank TPTB to bring them back - NOW.
~Amanda Tapping:
Loved her in SG-1. However aside from some crossover episodes I do not think she or any other character should have been brought over. If they can't even bring Zats across the galactic void -they can send the top scientist left on Earth to become a pencil-pusher? I'll take the Zat's, TY.
~As for Weir being a weak character and Sheppard taking over in emergencies?
Ok - First off SHEPPARD IS THE MIL.COMM. Weir directs the exped. and controls the city but is SUPPOSED to defer to the MC in military situations. Yes with the retrovirus Sheppard was insubordinate but that is part of his character. It set up a great tension between those two characters. As for them just having a male lead to come in and take over - no that's not what their doing. If Sheppard was female in that episode she would have acted the same. Let's face it - If you were being chased by a Wraith in your house who would you want saving your @$$? (pardon my alien)
~As with most Sci-Fi shows it's the producers and the PG-13 rating that cripples it. I would love to see SG-1 and Atlantis played out on HBO/MAX/SHOW....
