It's hard to imagine the 1980s cartoon we grew up with and loved was a dumbed-down sugar-coated version of the comic book: the way the Ninja Turtles were REALLY supposed to be. But it's true. Because of them, the more-faithful-to-the-original-comic version you see today is poo-poo'ed as an "extreme version" of the TMNT.
I disagree with Colton. The old seriesws dummed down too much and didn't have as much action as the 2003 series. the 2003 series has an all around better plot.
I was born in 1987. I used to watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on WPMT. I used to watch this show when I was little. I loved this show when I was a kid. This show never jumped the shark! This was my favorite show. I loved it! This was the best. I liked this show. I loved old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and I hate the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

It's funny to see lames who claim they are the biggest TMNT fans, yet they know nothing about the orignal TMNT Comics from the 80's. So to all you clueless nerds, listen up. True turtle history from a true turtle fan.
- The Ninja turtles were created as an independent black and white comic book back in 1984.
-The turtles were not happy go lucky clowns, they were violent kick ass freaks who killed.
-Shredder died in the first issue.
-Krang was based off the utroms from the original comic.
-The 1987-95 cartoon was a jump the shark version of the original black and white comic books.
- The original 3 movies were adapted from the original comics.
- The 95 season of the original TMNT cartoon jumped the shark with the super mutations, Carter, and Dregg.
-The 2002 Fox box turtles are the REAL TMNT, because they remain faithful to the original black and white comic book and turtle co-creator Peter Laird has creative input.
- The Current TMNT Fast Forward is a jump the shark of the 2002 toon.
- The cgi movie is a jump the shark cause it's just lame as hell.
The 80 and 90's TMNT toon was great, but it was a watered down rip off of the original version of the turtles, which the fox box 2002 version stayed true too ( except for Shredder being a Utrom, then Demon)

the tutles never lost, thats why my brother and me and a lot of our friends masturbated in the back yard
Simple 4KIDS remakes the series.
Just like they did with Sonic X. SatAm is the better one. Just like the old TMNT.

I'm 14 and I never saw the old show but I love the 2003 show, it's the best and I've become a die hard TMNT fan! I saw the 1st, 2nd, and 4th movie and I'm looking foward to seeing the third movie when I rent it from blockbuster. Except why does Raph sound like he belongs in the Godfather?
I grew up with this show. I saw it on WPIX TV everyday after school during Jr high. It wasn't so bad at first when they moved it to CBS in 1990. The show jumped in 1993/4, when Power Rangers (which always sucked) came in town and took the attention away from the Turtles. The "Red Sky" episodes (1994-1996) suck. Avoid those. Watch the 1987-1992 episodes instead. TMNT was the last Saturday morning cartoon worth watching (well Exo-Squad and Pirates of the Dark Water, other than those, almost no other 1990s cartoon was worth watching.)
Avoid the 1998 series TMNT:Next Mutation. It's just a travesty.
And the new cartoon, just avoid it, it sucks. Stop remaking stuff for the new generation. I'm sick of my childhood shows being bastardized by making some crap movie or new show.
GI Joe, Transformers, Ghostbusters, Voltron, He-Man and now this. What do they have in common, they was remade in the 1990s and the 2000s.

I think the major attraction of both the original Mirage comics, the first live action movie and the first four seasons of the "new" toon--aside from the martial arts and the sheer WEIRDNESS of four humanoid turtles and a humanoid rat living in the NYC sewer system--is the familial dynamics between the main characters. The fact that these brothers would DIE for one another--and for their master/father--is a given; however, sometimes just reading/watching the interactions between them (for example: the constant Leonardo/Raphael conflict of interests, the little brother-big brother relationship between Mikey and the other three, Don and Raph's anti-social tendencies as opposed to Leo's group oriented approach and Mikey's outgoing, people-loving personality) is entertainment enough, aside from all the other awesome stuff about this "universe".
As far as the "new" toon somehow not doing justice to the old one? How could it? That's like comparing enchiladas to (heh heh) pizza--both are good in their own way. The old toon was aimed at children and far more comedy based--also, it was a canon in and of itself, since the truth is the NEW TOON is more faithful to the original Mirage comics, in which April was NOT a reporter, Shredder died fairly early on in the series, and Raphael, far from being a high-pitched smartmouth, was a moody, angsty teenager more likely to fly off the handle at the slightest provocation than make light commentary.
Anyway, I think the "new" toon jumped the shark at the close of the fourth season--that is, with the whole "Fast Forward" plotline, which could have been interesting, but please. No April, no Casey, very little of that "familial" vibe, and a lot of corny crap aimed at kids...and I don't care what anyone says, the original TMNT were NOT meant for children--they were meant for teens and adults, and darn it, that's the medium they shine best in!

Note to all of the idiots: The new series did NOT-BUTCHER-ANYTHING. The original series did'nt stay true to the source materal, where as the new series not only adapted many of the original comics, they even added scenes from them in the first season.
The new series has since became it's own animal, not adapting much of the comic and maintaining it's own mythology. I still prefer the original series over the new one because of the comedy and originality of it though
Original series jumped: Shredder was removed
New series jumped: Fast Forward.

TMNT jumped whenever the second movie ended and Shredder was killed off. End of story period. The new TMNT is weak.
