Two names--Blake Lewis (beatboxing "talent") and Jordin Sparks (winning but can't hold a note that's in tune for more than 2 seconds). I stopped watching after that season.
As a huge fan of music and a musician myself (guitar), I do admire the talent and performing abilities of the contestants. But this basically comes across as a "glorified karaoke" show to me. And I believe that it sends the wrong message to people...i.e., too much emphasis on looks and presentation, not enough emphasis on the music itself. I could just imagine someone like Steve Perry competing on this show and Simon Cowell trying to make these cute little sarcastic criticisms regarding his appearance and his big nose!
But I think this show also highlights that the overwhelming majority of Americans today really don't understand music in general, which we also see with the current state of the music industry today. Someone like Paris Hilton can actually put out a CD that will sell numerous copies, but a "real artist" doesn't have the platform to get his/her music out to the masses. I think this show is a contributor to that happening, unfortunately.
One final thought for now...it seems like this is a show that is often described as being marketed toward teenagers (and I do see the teens in the crowd, of course). But I really think the biggest demographic for this show is middle-aged women. The women I work with will go over every episode in fine combed-tooth detail the next morning...I don't even need to watch the show, because I end up hearing about it from them.

This show wouldn't be half bad if the'd jettison the reality tv bullcrap with contestants holding hands and crying.
WTF! you've known each other for 2 weeks and you're all best friends for life now? What? you thought you'd all win together? HUH?
The show would be much better done like a discovery channel style "drama-mentary".
Give us more of a glimpse of the vocal technique training. Make the kids learn an instrument ... have bands, show us about music production and stuff.
Better yet, take some of the self-deluded awful people from the first rounds, put 'em in a music education boot-camp and make 'em come back and compete in the final rounds. Let us follow their journey.
THAT would be entertaining.

Oh my God, reality tv is not real! Who would have thought? When the judges started leaving the set, just for ratings, that's when the show jumped for me. Before that, I had already started watching the show just for Simon's insults after I had watched it for a couple of seasons and I was actually interested in the competition. It became more and more obvious the voting was fixed and they couldn't have the best singer win, either due to ratings (couldn't have fat Jennifer Hudson continue) or racism or the real star not deserving to get screwed on the amount of money they could make without American Idol or whatever it was.
Horrible, brain-damaged TV. Please, for the good of America, if you watch this show, do NOT have children and pass on whatever damaged gene you have to the next generation. The fact that this glorified karaoke contest is a top rated show and Pushing Daisies got cancelled is a comment on the terrible state of American telivision.
What bothers me is that contestants are picked by the judges in the hopes of them creating some controversy on the show. Like the chick who licked the other one during the first wave of auditions in Hollywood. It's not about talent ... although a few get through like Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Chris Daughtry, Carrie Underwood and David Cook ... it is more about "drama." I wonder how many truly talented people are forsaken for the people like Sanjaya to bring some contention amongst the contestants. Before Sanjaya there were equally as annoying contestants who moved up the ladder like Justin Guarini, John Stevens, Jon Peter Lewis, Scott Savol and Kevin Covais. Sanjaya passed the torch to Jason Castro this past season. I am pretty much done with the show.
this show is a cancer to tv that is spreading fast if someone don't stop soon tv might die i mean it sucks so bad and they are so many shows that are just like it and more and more just keep coming someone stop this show.
Perhaps "American Idol" has finally "jumped the shark"? LA news reports a former AI contestant committed suicide near judge Paula Abdul's home.
I agree that the show is a big part of what is wrong with the music industry today. It started in the nineties with groups like the Spice Girls where producers held cattle calls for singers instead of bands getting together naturally and jamming in someone's garage. Except for the Monkees, when did you ever see that in the past? If you look at old record albums, most of the singers weren't that good looking; it was the way they sounded on record that counted. Now everyone on AI ends up looking like they came off an assembly line. Curly hair is flat ironed, unique or flamboyant clothes are toned down, teeth are fixed, ect. I haven't been excited about a new artist since Jordis Unga of Rock Star, and wisely she has resisted the industry's attempts to turn her into just another product.
On a different subject, I want to weigh in on the Ruben vs. Clay controversy. To me it was like comparing Anita Baker and Patti Labelle. Ruben is a crooner like Anita and Clay is a belter like Patti. I can't say Anita is a better singer than Patti or visa versa, because their styles are so different. They're both just as talented, and it's the same with Clay and Ruben.
I found and find it truly sad the way people still hold a grudge against that gentle giant just because he won a contest, and are glad to see his career fail and the other troubles he's been having. I for one hope things look up for him. I feel that if he was back in the eighties, when R&B artists like Luther Vandross and Freddie Jackson were popular with the mainstream, he would have been very successful, but unfortunately times have changed and his kind of singing is out of style.

This show is waaaaay over-rated. Personally I never saw what was so interesting about it to begin with. Do you really think that a goof-ball, off key just all around bad singer would even make it as far as they do ? It's all fake, it's t.v. people.
The only time that it has caught my attention long enough was to see if David Cook would win.
