I agree that the show is a big part of what is wrong with the music industry today. It started in the nineties with groups like the Spice Girls where producers held cattle calls for singers instead of bands getting together naturally and jamming in someone's garage. Except for the Monkees, when did you ever see that in the past? If you look at old record albums, most of the singers weren't that good looking; it was the way they sounded on record that counted. Now everyone on AI ends up looking like they came off an assembly line. Curly hair is flat ironed, unique or flamboyant clothes are toned down, teeth are fixed, ect. I haven't been excited about a new artist since Jordis Unga of Rock Star, and wisely she has resisted the industry's attempts to turn her into just another product.

On a different subject, I want to weigh in on the Ruben vs. Clay controversy. To me it was like comparing Anita Baker and Patti Labelle. Ruben is a crooner like Anita and Clay is a belter like Patti. I can't say Anita is a better singer than Patti or visa versa, because their styles are so different. They're both just as talented, and it's the same with Clay and Ruben.
I found and find it truly sad the way people still hold a grudge against that gentle giant just because he won a contest, and are glad to see his career fail and the other troubles he's been having. I for one hope things look up for him. I feel that if he was back in the eighties, when R&B artists like Luther Vandross and Freddie Jackson were popular with the mainstream, he would have been very successful, but unfortunately times have changed and his kind of singing is out of style.
hey i was the 1 who only liked

This show is waaaaay over-rated. Personally I never saw what was so interesting about it to begin with. Do you really think that a goof-ball, off key just all around bad singer would even make it as far as they do ? It's all fake, it's t.v. people.
The only time that it has caught my attention long enough was to see if David Cook would win.
It's just a popularity contest that's politically correct. Boring and Fake!
a couple of reasons
1.Day one seriously i used to love it but now i hate it and always go to the Ymca whenever its on!
2.Sanjaya if he had won O.M.G.
3.It got old see answer 1
4.The fourth judge OMG that is the ultimate jump the shark momment! i remember thinking thats it im not watching season 8!
Kara DioGuardi is joining the show? America, meet Cousin Oliver!
WOW I didn't expect to see so many
day 1 votes,
I don't really care for American Idol
but it's not that bad
it would be nice if this website had a
day one page
but American Idol is not a show i'd expect to see top the list though
I would named this America's Next Singer
or America's Top Singer
not American Idol
I liked when Dolly Parton was on there
and sang Jesus and Gravity
although it would have better if she sang He's Alive or Hello God
both songs are prettier than
Jesus & Gravity
If they didn't jump the shark in the past - they will this season as they bring on a fourth judge.
I think this show jumped when we figured it out: they don't care who is the best singer in America. If they did, then half of last season's contestants would not have made it.

Most of us have heard stories of people trying out for American Idol, singing the pants off of the rest of the auditions, and being told that they "aren't what American Idol is looking for", and not being allowed to audition in front of the judges. While guy in a chicken suit goes right in.
I agree with you 100% Concerned American. This show is what's wrong with America. People obsess over this show too much. It should not make the news like it does. It also is a reflection of the sad state of the music industry. It shows just how manufactured music is, especiallyt he bubblegum crap that these "artists" always put out. ever noticed how these are the types of people that would soil themselves if you so much as said a harsh word to them? This show is also what's wrong with TV today, a "reality wasteland" as others have said. So in more ways than Concerned American mentioned, this show symbolizes the plight of America.

And lastly, Simon Cowell is just some puke, Paula Abdul is a WASHED UP artist, and Randy Jackson has no talent at all.
" a concered american":

Come'on now..american idol symbolizes everything thats wrong within our society?

i dont get why people always blame ignorance on tv shows. i agree with you that the increased obsession of tv shows is scary but i just see it as entertainment...overrated? of course but its made for fun
I'm utterly serious when I say this: American Idol symbolizes everything that is wrong with America. Most Americans will be able to tell you who got kicked off the show last night but can't tell you when the Civil War occurred within 10 years. We care more about what glorified karaoke singer wins this inane, pointless competition than we do about bettering our own lives or doing something constructive. We all need our distractions, and tv is great for that, but our obsession with this show is scary, pathetic, and dangerous.
i think season 6 made the show jump.
the one where Jordin Sparks won. i
think that was the worst season. it
just got so pointless and i couldnt
even pick a favorite because i didnt
feel anything coming from them. i
barely knew who anyone was. so it
kinda sucked for season 7s contestants.
people got sick of it because of season 6 and they dont want to see another episode of American Idol again because of it.
i feel that american idol quickly takes away most individuality of the winning vocalist! if you watch the liove shows you might like the performances but if you hear the winner's singles you are like "what the ****???" they are all corporate sludge no depth nothing real about them! i will be physically sick when i hear david cook's debut album he is an excellent vocalist with amazing potential but they will drain the life out of him . the judges have an image of who they want to win and then they win! the truly good or different vocalists are criticised and voted off and simon cowell only knows what sells and that's all he cares about! if there was an edition where they had well know excellent sucessful recording arsists eg. aretha franklin, patti labelle. people of that era that would be a show. it mite be jumpinmg the shark but at least we would see some talent
I swear to God, I'll never know how this show stayed at top for 5 years....
